I once coached a director of nursing—I’ll call her Anne—who was striving to improve her leadership approach and make her team feel more valued and supported. One day, during a particularly stressful period, a nurse made a significant error. This was the perfect opportunity for Anne to try out a new approach we had discussed, centered on empathy and respect.
Instead of reprimanding the nurse in front of everyone or becoming angry and emotional, Anne invited the nurse to a private chat. As they sat down, Anne could see the fear and anxiety in the nurse’s eyes. It never feels good to make a mistake and she was obviously fearful of Anne’s response. Anne then gently explained the mistake, discussed ways to handle similar situations in the future, and reassured the nurse that everyone makes errors and it’s part of the learning process. This simple act of respect and understanding not only resolved the issue but also boosted the nurse’s confidence and commitment. The nurse left the conversation feeling valued and supported by her leader, ready to take on her duties with renewed motivation.
